Elkhart Warbirds Oct. 8

Sat Oct 08, 2011 6:25 pm

Just a sampling of some warbirds from the warbird fly-in at Elkhart (EKM) this morning. I had to leave early to come back to Kalamazoo to work, but when I left at 10:30 the following aircraft were on the field:

F4U-5
16 T-6s
5 Stearman
T-28
YAK-52TW
2 T-34s
2 YAK-52/CJ-6s
Texan II

And I might be missing a few. A lot of the T-6s and Stearmans will be at Watervliet (40C) on the grass strip tomorrow if anyone is interested in checking it out.

Blah blah blah blah, here are some pictures from my crappy pocket digital camera:

That may explain why I heard a radial engine aircraft land at Battle Creek airport Saturday morning, and take off awhile later (I'm a mile or so from the airport, but the view is blocked by trees, so I didn't see the aircraft.)

They kept the tower pretty busy, but I wish I had known you were here.

Sorry Chris, I should've sent you a PM. I asked a couple of the line guys and they said you were in the tower.

Here are the last of my pics. I think they're kind of funny because my shadow looks like I'm saluting the aircraft :D

I see the notation Yak52/CJ6 a lot. Are the aircraft really that close? My understanding is that the CJ 6 is a stand alone design. Certainly the shape of the tail surfaces is completely different and the CJ has a gull wing where the Yak 52 doesn't. It also looks in photos anyway that the CJ is longer than a Yak 52. How many parts of the CJ are interchangeable with the Yak 52?
