Common for the bearings to be that way from that time period. The Spitfire is full of open bearings as well.
If maint programs are followed cleaning, inspecting and reapplying grease is pretty easy.
US design requirements are different. Seal the bearing and make it last a long time without the same need for hands on maint. Insp and change if needed.
