dtpitcairn wrote:If you look at photo 116 at the link I posted above (hydraulic gear picture in training manual), the cowling definitely looks yellow. Compare it to the yellow between the blue and red on the propeller tips. It matches the cowling while the silver part of the blade does not. At least that is my interpretation. Either way it will look amazing.

I have the actual book in my hand.
I believe the cowl is bare alum. If you look at page 5 of the book with the MLG retracted in a small window on the upper R/H side of the photo/page.
If you look real close the trailing edge vertical strip of the ring cowl is a different shade. This part of the cowl ring is stainless steel and is riveted to the edge of the cowl to stiffen the rear edge.
If it was painted the cowl would have uniform shading. 2 photos on page 21 are close ups of the prop showing low and high pitch. They seem to confirm the bare metal cowl ring.
The prop tips could possibly have a black stripe, bare and then a red tip.
The wing shading on page 2 of the booklet shows a change on the leading edge of the Left Wing about even with the inboard edge of the Aileron. Whether the darker shade goes inboard all the way to the wing attach cover is tough to judge. A photo on page 32 shows what might be a change in the paint shade about a foot inboard of the landing light.
The tail also appears bare. Some skins and fairings are anodized. The rear most fairing where the elevator bellcrank is covered shows much darker in the wide angle photo. If the tail was painted any color that would show uniform shading.
I knew there was remnant of the Navy Bu # visible on the leading edge of the vertical. I took a pic and this showed up-

Interesting how the boot cowl shroud around the exhaust outlet is different.

That's how the AT-6A and SNJ-3 were.
Pretty slick looking.
Probably changed it to get the exhaust a little further away. Maybe Carbon Monoxide issues?

Thanks for the details Rich,

The stainless edge on the cowl would have had to be masked for there to be a contrast so I see what you mean.

I also see what you mean about the bell crank cover. I thought that was bare yet the line above it was yellow along with the rudder since that was all uniform looking but now looking back at the color picture I see that the cover would also have been yellow. Your attention to detail is impressive.

I don't have the book so was going by the posted pictures. That is great that the other pictures have more detail about the wing colors.

I am looking forward to more pictures, especially of the gun ring fabrication. Thanks for posting all this info.

I'm guessing the later one was more easily formed and assembled by a mom and pop shop.

I don't know if the outlet area increases with the later version.
Maybe it flows more exhaust?

Is the pipe different too then?

I took a quick look at the drawings and between the 77-42005 exhaust on the SNJ-3 and the 88-42005 of the later models the outlet position is different in relation to the center line.
77- is 4 13/16" below the A/C centerline and the 88- is 10 1/64" below the CL.
The later exhaust outlet is also extended. It looks like they welded up an extended tube onto the earlier design outlet so internal dimensions look the same. Everything is just rotated a few degrees and extended.

My son has been working in the corner pulling the fabric off the control surfaces. On one elevator he found the dreaded AN3 Nail Bolt-

Otherwise they are looking pretty good so far-

For many years this was operated with the Vest rear seat which required a different stop for the elevator control movement limit.
This is what was installed-

This went through O/H in 44 and additional data plates were attached to different parts to document this.
These are on the Horizontal Stabs-

NAA Plate on the Vertical-

At least there is a thread and a half beyond the nutplate, so the bolt was sized correctly!

A quick look at the difference in the exhaust between the AT-6A/AT-6B/SNJ-3 and the later T-6C, D, F, G/SNJ-4, 5, 6, 7.
The SNJ-3-

SNJ-5-

Use the pipe from the Cylinder 4 that feeds as a reference. The early outlet is about 6" higher than the later versions.
The dataplate on the SNJ-3 Exhaust says "Anti-Monoxide".

The SNJ-5 is now topless.

BE has had an oil change and brakes adjusted, Jim flew a short flight today-

Some original colors in the SNJ-3-

I think the lighter green is from the factory and the darker green is from its O/H at Corpus Christi NAS in 44.
