Big news from the Collings Foundation

I saw this one at Michigan a few years ago. Great looking bird! Never knew those markings were Quonset. Hey if Collings doesn't mind having some of their collection at other museums I know someplace where we can stick the F4U-5NL.

Quonset is not exactly local, but when we need to go and pick it up for an air show, it is a lot closer than driving all the way to Bridgeport. The person who flies our Corsair lives in Southern ME, so having the aircraft in Bridgeport would be pretty difficult.

Maybe I can convince Dan to move down to dirty Bridgeport!

Always wondered why SPAD's had blue glass?

As they said, to reduce glare for the Crows in the back. Within the AD-5, there were sub variants, enough difference that, when the designation was changed to A-1, they broke out the A-1E and A-1G. To the average bear, they appear to be the same, but the G had even less window area, meaning that the shape of the glass area was the same but it was either sheeted or painted over. Textbook G's are easy to spot because they have an arch-shaped window cutout.

On the other hand, sometimes G's are hard to spot as many were retrofitted with E-style windows, particularly the USAF birds. To many folks, the G and J models don't exist, it's simply E & H, but that ain't quite right.

I don't know if it was a Navy thing, but USAF A-1 pilots called that back area of their airplanes "the blue room".
