The Bomber Camp that we put on as a fund raiser for the Collings Foundation was a hit with the campers again this year. Everyone had a great time learning about all of the crew positions and the equipment used by the Aircrew of WWII. I will post more photos later but for now:
I have wanted to put a camera at the end of the gun on the ball turret facing back at the turret so you could see the aircraft rotating behind the turret. Whitney, who is the crew chief on the Collings B-24 and is also a great guy, clamped his Gopro to the 50 cal barrel and got the shot that has been bouncing around in my head for some time. Thank you Whitney for taking that video and letting me use it. Thanks also to Rob Collings and the Collings Foundation for making all of this possible.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RcPTnsAP9wUIf you or anyone you know would like to ride in the ball turret and spend two days experiencing WWII aviation hands on then come on out and try our Bomber Camp. From learning about all of the equipment that the different aircrew worked with to shooting their weapons (45, M1 carbine, M1 Garand, M11 gunnery shotgun and the gun turret training truck) and flying a simulated mission and eating meals right out of the 1944 cook book. You can try out the ball turret powered up just as they did in the video and you can drop dummy bombs and try to hit the pickle barrel which, I am sad to report, is still the safest place to be on the bomb range!
The Arizona Ground Crew Living History gang is the greatest bunch of guys and they sure make the camp special and they keep getting better each year. The volunteers such as the AZ bunch and a lot of others generous folk are what make the event truly great. There is so much effort put out by the volunteers behind the scenes to make this camp happen and I want to thank you all very much for your hard work!
