Just saw what they said was the final episode of Flying Wild Alaska.
Jim Tweto is going to begin to retire. From their ERA's website, he was the boss of a smaller outfit that merged (with others) with ERA's fixed wing ops....and they made him COO (but I wonder how "hands on" he could be from his remote location). If anyone knows more of the history, I'd like to hear it.
His daughter, Ariel, got her PPL..in a new 172 loaned by Cessna. (Must be nice to be on TV...lots of neat perks).

Too bad, it was the only "reality" show I still watched and seemed less fake than most.
Still, it would be fun to check in occasionally with the other pilots featured on the series.

It was a good series. Shame to see it go. I understand it was low ratings that killed it.
Guess we have to watch Big Ang now.. Oy

Ratings must be what also killed 'Alaska Wingmen' on NAT GEO just like it seems to have done in ICE PILOTS (never mind that it rarely got promoted on other channels). So now it's down to 248 reality shows about Swamp People, Swamp Cops, Swamp Gator hunters, Swamp pawn shops, swampers from the swamp, etc. etc.
Even solidly popular shows like MYTHBUSTERS seem to be on some sort of 'programmed by a crack smoker' schedule since it's on, then disappears, then it's back for two weeks.

Yeah, it really sucks that just as the series was hitting its stride that Discovery cancelled it. Did the same with Stormchasers (although that was due to the understandable issue of fuel costs skyrocketing for the support/production crew).

As for Jim, he was very hands/is very hands on from what I understand. As they kinda alluded to in the last couple of episodes he kept track of every flight every day and ran the day-to-day ops, especially for the "small plane" operation that used to be Hageland (his company) and Frontier Flying Service. ERA is actually the smallest part of the operation being that it mainly services the hubs and a few large destinations (like Kodiak) from Fairbanks and Anchorage. However, as Alaska Airlines is moving more and more out of the regional operations (because the newer 737's aren't as suited to gravel strips), ERA is taking on more and more operations, getting more DHC-8's, and really becoming a full-fledged operation, so I'm not surprised that Jim's about ready to step away and let someone else who's "more capable" (not that he's incapable) step in. I'm sure he'll still have a role of some sort with the company and probably keep flying for ERA for a while, but he'll be able to take a more relaxed approach to it. :)

As for Ice Pilots, it's going strong on Weather Channel and Season 2 is finally being aired. From what I've heard, ratings are as good or better than their other shows, so I think it'll be fine there. The biggest problem now is that the cable channels have raised their expectations. When years ago a 1 or a 1.5 share was considered "spectacular" it's now a death knell. It's killed a lot of good, solid shows recently, not just reality TV. Hell, Eureka (one of my guilty pleasures) was cancelled this year and was averaging a 2+ share most of last season. This season it was even better but I'm sure NBC Universal just wrote that off as a blip because everyone knew it was the last season. Thankfully, there may be hope for a lot of shows because they're finally tracking DVR'ing of shows and using that towards ratings, and it's proving interesting for shows that they thought were low in ratings because they're finding a substantial DVR/Online presence. This may keep some shows in the future around now that they'll start taking that into account.

The only real issues I have with Ice Pilots being on the Weather Channel (other than, since when is watching someones neighborhood being blown away considered 'entertainment'?) is they seem to be locked onto showing the same 6 episodes over and over, and over I've had enough of 'don't muck with Chuck' and 'Frozen 4' being endlessly repeated to last a lifetime. There's still season 2 to be completed and season 3.
I guess we're stuck with sterling' entertainment like 'Dancing with the Americas got swamp people' "whutchew doin' Zeke?" 'Ah'm tryin' to grow me a tooth soz ah kin have me three uv um'

 :bs: :bs: :ouch:

Yep..."series finale" announce was a shock. Always looked forward each season to the latest eskimo rap trend or how the new batch of "stink flipper" was coming along. pop1 Real stuff doesn't seem to have a place at the "reality TV" table.

Really getting tired of the "Bubba" shows and the copycat clones...they're making it easy not to watch TV these days.

As for Ice Pilots, I saw one of the WC episodes last week (Arnie retirement episode) and I didn't realize till then he had passed on. Bummer, retirement will kill ya... :(

There are still plenty of Alaska-based shows....Alaska fishermen, gold miners, lumberjacks, truck drivers, state patrol officers....everything except Alaska Swamp people (hey...that's MY idea..I'm gonna be RICH!!!).

I think 1/2 the state's population is made of of reality TV "stars" and production crews.

Thank god these shows are getting canceled! It gives us all more time to watch QUALITY Reality TV like "Here Comes Honey Boo-Boo".....or it may just signal the End of the World as we know it.Trailer linked not for the weak of heart...(or actually anyone with an IQ over 40....).
