Say bye bye to free Webshots photo hosting

Sun Nov 04, 2012 10:43 pm

Webshots is going to a pay site and if you don't subscribe all your photos will be deleted. When all my links are broken on December first you'll know why.

I could move my stuff to photobucket, but then I'd have to edit nearly every photo post I've ever made to a new URL. Not gonna happen in this lifetime!

Move all of it to photobucket and post a link to it in your tag. or whatever it is you call it that goes under your posts

My biggest worry is that photobucket will eventually do the same thing.
I've seen this happen a lot, where a free site gets a lot of people, then says everyone's gotta pay. I wonder if that business model works at all...

Wouldn't surprise me at all. I moved my photos from site to site (remember Xoom anyone?) several times but eventually surrendered and gave Flickr my $25. I'm happy with them.

Too bad. Webshots was my primary gallery, although I used photobucket for forum sharing. Now even for money, webshots will not do what it did before. It's just a way to store all your photos in the "cloud" (= some server in New Delhi?). Does anyone really store every full-size 25-megabyte-or-more image that they shoot on such sites?

Highlights of the new Smile service:

No more public sharing of your photos: http://help.getsmileapp.com/customer/po ... y-anymore-

Completely unconvincing :bs: explanation of why your photos have been defaced by webshots watermarks. http://help.getsmileapp.com/customer/po ... termarked-.

They haven't even bothered to create a way for you to cancel your webshots membership and let them know you're not interested in the new service: http://help.getsmileapp.com/customer/po ... -a-refund-

All caused by the ill-advised acquisition of webshots by a greeting card company: http://help.getsmileapp.com/customer/po ... -changing-

All in all, I wish the new service a quick and unprofitable death.

I host all of my photos on a free blog site, tumblr specifically, but any free blog would do.

Thanks for the tour August, and the heads-up, Brandon.

I'm remarkably impressed, I really can't see what they think they're doing, except closing down an OK picture service and offering something people are going to neither need or want. Hit the 'download your photos' request, because I'm finished with them, and I've got a box saying:
'Your request has been submitted
We will begin processing your account shortly.'

And nothing - no hint as to how, how long, what method, etc.

Click refresh, and you get:
'Processing your download

Your request for has been submitted and we're currently processing your photos and videos. You'll receive an email when this is finished.'
