NAS Miramar


Three (3) F-4J Phantom II fighter aircraft of VF-33 from USS Independence (CVA-62) c 1970's outside of NAS Miramar

This photo is very interesting to me, as it shows three versions of the VF-33 Tarsiers (later: "Starfighters") paint scheme. Date-wise, I'm guessing it's very late '70's or early 1980; and probably was taken just before VF-33 turned in their F-4s for F-14 Tomcats in 1981, showing three of the livery versions carried by the F-4s during their squadron tenure. Note that modex 200 out front is in the tactical grey scheme with small star 'n bar, etc.

The next two photos show a similar situation...the Demon exiting squadron life, and the Phantom being welcomed to the squadron. These two photos appear to be taken at the same ceremony, one right after the other. Note the sailors saluting the airplanes, a sign of respect on the Demon's departure, and the Phantom's arrival. Also, the F-4 is lettered for USS Oriskany, which seems odd to me. I don't recall the "O-Boat" operating F-4s. I'm not sure any of the Essex class operated F-4s; does anybody know if they ever did?

I apologize if this was pointed out earlier in the thread, but...what's up in front of the three Skyrays?

To me it looks like it could be a couple of AJ-1 Savages in the middle and some Scooters outside, in a diamond formation?

Great pics of North Island too....one of my absolute favorite places to fly out of...if only to enjoy the sunbathers out front of the Hotel Del Coronado!

I was thinking A3D Skywarriors also. And I am sure that the "1966" date show with the Skyray photos is wrong. It has to be several years earlier than that as by 1966 the only F-6A (post Sept. 62 designation for the F4D-1) Skyrays in service were a couple or so with the U.S. Navy Test Pilot School at NAS Pax River, MD. All regular Squadron Skyrays were retired by about 1964 at the latest as far as I know.

Also, the second of the two Skyray photos in the group actually shows 3 F7U-3 Cutlasses parked on the ramp below, which would suggest the photo could be no later than about 1957/58 or so.

Just some trivia, but one of the red roofed houses near the water's edge with the lighthouse directly below the 3rd plane was used as Viper's house from the movie Topgun. The picture is looking north and I believe it was the western most house with the tree on the side that was used.

First, note the two parachuters on the lower wings, one of whom is about to step off.

And I almost didn't recognize this one...did you notice the outline of a Lexington-class (CV-2) carrier outline on the field for FCLP ops (Field Carrier Landing Practice), same thing our squadron F-4Js used to do at Fentress Field in Virginia, out of NAS Oceana. We called the aux fields "bounce fields" (continuous touch-n-goes = "bouncing").

(Fentress is about 2/3rds the way down the page, but lots of interesting reading about other NAS Oceana outlying fields here)

Even today, I know out here in Puget Sound that there's a modern version of a carrier deck painted on NOLF Coupeville (Naval Outlying Landing Field), on Whidbey Island, that the NAS Whidbey Island attack and jamming squadrons used to use for carrier landing practice (see the links below). I'm not sure if they still use that field, though, as Coupeville has been growing and I'm sure encroachment is an issue now. Maybe the Inspector knows?

I think that this second photo of the "1966" Fords shows their "prey" to better effect - and they seem to have a real good target lock on them, too!

In that B&W photo in particular (as opposed to the following color photo of the exact same aircraft but with a more uncertain date apparently) the camo scheme is shown to great effect as well - I had to look two or three times before I even saw the airplanes in the photo!

Hey, whaddya know?! I didn't think I'd see that smokin' hot honey again after showing her the town on liberty call the night before. I dumped her on the dork officer smokin' the ciggy on the left...he should know better not to smoke on the ramp. However, the squid on the right has the right idea and ain't wasting no time...doffing his dixie cup to her and already offering her the first beer of her day!
