Mystery WWII US Navy Gunsight

Good day,

Does anybody know anything about this Navy Mark 10 illuminated gunsight produced in 1942?

I cannot find any info or documenation about it anywhere. Must say i'm not even 100% sure it's an aircraft and not an anti-aircraft sight.

Any help/assistance/info much appreciated to complete the section on US Navy aircraft sights of my website.

I have a small collection of WWII reflector sights and I have never seen the one you have. Checked on the Funatsu Aviation Museum Page

There's a Mark 10 sight, but much different, and Korean War vintage.

Don't doubt it's authentic. Perhaps a shipboard sight--it's BUORD, not BUAERO, although I don't think that's a rock solid distinction. Will be interested to see if anything turns up.

The Gunsight said to be a Mark 10 in the japanese website is definitely not as it is simply a classic Mark 8 illuminated sight with either a Mark 4 or Mark 7 adjustable reflector head used in post WW2 TBM, AF2-S and P2V-2 to P2V-4 airplanes.

So, the mystery remains!!!

I had one, a very complex piece. mine was a model "0" & had an attached MK 18 range finder. it had a test tag of 1952 & 3 data plates. made by naval ordinance plant, Indianapolis Indiana.

I am curious about how it mounts. Is there a machined ring with a slight radius just above the box? Can I get a closer image of this area as it will narrow down the possibilities of its use.

I was thinking that the radius mounting would indicate flex and turret installations but it isn't there. Cool sight for sure.
