C-46 ID help

Tue May 21, 2013 11:10 pm

In my collection I have a photo of C-46 'Ant Virgie' which you can see here:

After finding the photo on my site I was contacted by the pilot's son. He has some of his father's log books but nothing from his time in China where he flew this C-46. I haven't been able to find any information on this plane and was hoping maybe someone here may recognize it. I was hoping to at least ID the airframe but it would be great to find where she flew from, etc.

Greg, I'd grabbed the auction image for this photo and the info that went with it indicated the '48th Repair Squadron'.

Take a look here: http://www.cbi-history.com/part_xix_b.html

If you do a CTRL+F search for '48th' on that page, you'll get a few hits including the 48th Depot Repair Squadron, which was part of the 83rd Air Depot Group and stationed at the Bengal Air Depot.

That doesn't ID the airframe, and it doesn't tell you which outfit the ship flew with. All it suggests is that this C-46 passed through the Bengal Air Depot... but it's a start.
I'm afraid that I'm lacking in resources regarding transport outfits and can't take it much further, if any. But someone who has more with which to work could hopefully take it forward...

Thanks Steve, that gives me somewhere to start. I've had this one for a little while and my record keeping back then wasn't up to par. Glad you had hung on to the info.
