I agree a comprehensive book on the S-55/H-19, etc. would be fantastic.

What would really be great would be a book with extensive coverage of all the great Sikorsky and other medium/large piston engine helicopters of the Fifties and Sixties era. Of particular interest to me are the S-55/H-19, S-56/H-37, S-58/H-34 and the Vertol/Piasecki H-21.

Well there is the H-34 book by Lundh. Like many Schiffer titles, it's more of an operational history...it only has a paragraph or two on the development.
The Illustrated History of the H-21 by Brandt and Davies is more complete with a lot of information on the development and various proposals. Too bad it doesn't have any color photos. Some guy in his Amazon review of this book had the nerve to call the H-21 a failure. True, it...and most helicopters of that period had operational limitations, but to call it a failure is just wrong.

If you're into helicopters, there is also a book from Europe about civil H-43s....


There needs to be a good book about all the Sikorsky's. I was just (re)reading in Whirlybirds, A History of the U.S. Helicopter Pioneers, by Spenser that aside from the well known products, Sikorsky produced the lesser known S-52 in civil and military forms, butt pretty much swept the unsuccessful S-53?HJS-1 under the carpet. Also unknown is a Piasecki-like twin rotor design, the S-54.
