Drool, drool, drool... I think that derelict second one is 40-2894 at Chino. William Larkins took a photo of it as well, if you can find it to compare the two.

I would bet it's the same photo. It looks like a B Larkin photo. He's taken some great photos over the years of a lot of good stuff.

I recall seeing pictures of B-18s (or maybe B-10s) dropping relief supplies to people stranded by the terrible floods of 1936 in the mid-Atlantic area.

The B-18's role in history is a cautionary tale of the dangers of procuring a fiscally expedient weapons system versus purchasing a better, but more expensive, weapons system. Had the Air Corps purchased B-17s as it wanted, instead of the B-18s the GHQ foisted upon it, we may have been in a bit better position to "hit back" once we were drawn into the war. Granted the early model B-17s were obsolete, but at least they weren't as useless as the B-18 in an offensive role. The B-18 did fine as an anti-sub plane in the early days of the war, but that was about it.

It was also a classic case of 'How many can I get for a buck?' each B-17 cost around the price of three BOLOS and the WD/Army was still playing the post Depression bagpipe solo on a cheapskate budget and looking more for quantity and visual impact "25 B-18's in formation is more impressive on the newsreels than 6 B-17's are" eyewash-
I think they were B-10's in the flood relief photos.

Those are the markings used on 37-469 at the NMUSAF. Same plane, or were they chosen for looks? The yellow and black checkerboard cowls do stand out.

Someday I hope I can afford a 1/72 Special Hobby B-18 kit (or two) - I waited 35 years for a good Bolo and now that there is one, it costs fifty bucks...
