Mark:

I really enjoyed your photos of the various bomber airfields in the southern Marianna's! In particular seeing wartime Harmon AAF (33rd photo in the set) as images of that field are so rare. The airfield to the immediate left (on top of the bluff) is that of Agana. I've attached a 1964 photo I took of Harmon from the Trust Territory DC-4 just after taking off from Agana on my way to Saipan. Looking at a current Bing/maps the area has now been totally redeveloped with no signs of the original airfield whatsoever.

Of Course, and this post goes out to a few others who have sent me a PM asking for the same information.
Remember to create an account if you wish to download photos. etc.

1. http://www.fold3.com/

2. Scholl right to "World War II" icon and click once. (assuming WWII photos and data are what you are interested in)

3.Click once on "WWII US Air Force Photos" ... you will now be here. http://www.fold3.com/title_495/wwii_us_ ... ce_photos/

4. Enter just about anything you like to search, click "search"

5. You now should have several photos to choose from depending on what you enter for your search. This is the simplified directions. There's more to learn as you get used to using the archives, such as multiple searches, downloading data, reports, etc. etc.

If you still have problems let me know and I'll help walk you through it. Days and days of searching ahead. Have fun.

Mark, I believe you get a great deal of pleasure from this site.
You don't seem to be after any praise or accolades.
Like it or not, however, you and your contributions have become a cornerstone of this place.
I know many appreciate all you contribute and all I can say is thank you!

Cheers man :drink3:

Thank you kindly Andy, although it's always a bit uncomfortable, I can always count on a nice set of words from you and I'm very humbled. Much appreciated my friend. :D

I've been lurking on the site for a few years now, but this thread has made me join! My grandfather was a member of the 509th Composite BG, 638th Maintennance squadron I believe, don't have my 509th year book in front of me. It's nice to see all the shots of Tinian. I've only seen the pics in the yearbook and the few propaganda shots of the Enola Gay and Bockscar. We were always proud that he was a member of a hand picked unit. He told me his view, when I was a teenager, while we were out flying in his Champ. He was NOT happy! He had been a Flight Engineer, training on B-17's and B-24's. When he was picked to become part of the group, he lost his wings and became a First Seargent on the ground crews. He never forgave the military for taking him out of the air. Nor was he a big fan of Tibbets either. We wanted to go to an airshow, where Tibbets was doing signings, so they could get together and he wanted nothing to do with it. Anyways... thank you for the thread Mark! Great pics!! :D

Your welcome Jeff, glad to have you aboard and much appreciate your grandfather's service. Thanks as well for some interesting insight on his service career. Fascinating indeed.

M
