My guess is that the -1 Corsairs would have been very comparable to the P-47Ds.

I believe the Royal Navy used Corsairs in missions to Norway. Not sure if they engaged any Luftwaffe aircraft?
Edit from wiki: At the end of the war, 18 FAA squadrons were operating the Corsair. British Corsairs served both in Europe and in the Pacific. The first, and also most important, European operations were the series of attacks (Operation Tungsten) in April, July and August 1944 on the German battleship Tirpitz, for which Corsairs from HMS Victorious and HMS Formidable provided fighter cover.[61] It appears the Corsairs did not encounter aerial opposition on these raids.

Our mystery F4U has moved up a bit! The aircraft to the right is a poss C-46 Tail section of a C-46 of Slick Airways of S. Calif c. 1945-46. These folks operated a cargo/air freight service out of H. Hughes Apt near LA?. Photo via AEC.

A further research on the sample Buno "898" turns out to be Buno F4U-4 97369 c. 1970s at Quantico MCAS. This sample is now on display at the new museum. Tks

(FYI):
Read the article on A/C (Summer 2014) about the xtra parts & disassembled F4Us that came back to Calif c. 1980s.
The interesting pics of the A/c in question Buno 124692 is indeed the fuselage of the X FAH 607. When it arrived c. March '56, it came in with a carburetor problem that persisted for some time. It had a take -off accident c. '57-58 & later on it was put to pasture for spare parts. It prob never wore the "607" Reg for this reason.
p.s Maybe Mr. Fred Riberts will come up with some pics of the center section as found. tks
