F-86 Sabre trivia question

Fri Mar 15, 2013 1:05 pm

Does anyone know anything about the lighting arrangement on wartime F-86 sabres? I'm assuming they had red/green wing lighting, and I understand that they also had one amber + one white tail light. I'm assuming they had a landing light somewhere. Did they have any fuselage lights? What sort? Anyone have a helpful photo or diagram?

Any info would be helpful...

Fritz,

Yes, red and green anti-collision lights on the wingtips. Not sure about the white and amber on the tail. I don't recall any lights on the fuselage, other than the landing lights. The landing lights (two of them) are under the nose and they retract. I know this because I need one (the right side) for VFM's F-86F.

Drop a PM to WIXer "sabremech". Dave knows pretty much everything about F-86s! :D

Hi Fritz,
Here's pictures of all the external lights on our Sabre. There is one more on the belly that I didn't include in my list.

Hope this helps,

Is the belly light a strobe or just a solid light?

I believe it is just a clear light and not a strobe.

Strobes for aircraft lighting hadn't been invented when F-86's were operational in the service. Some restorations might include them.

Big thanks, guys! You helped make another Fritz the Fox animated cartoon a wee bit better...
