The squadron hack is an otherwise unassigned, usually war-weary, aircraft used to transport men and materials, make parts runs, fetch scotch, or simply to fly around without messing up the roster otherwise

A Flight Assembly ship is a war-weary aircraft, usually painted in an outlandish and highly visible paint scheme used as a flying 'beacon' and air traffic control for a large flight of bombers to form up on - creating the formations they will use for their mission. They became necessary with the huge formations prevalent as the war progressed. Imagine what is involved in putting together a 1000 plane raid

Mark, where did you track down those pics at Fürth? I did a search through the Freeman collection and maybe I'm not looking for the right thing, but I really REALLY want to see if they're there so I can download the high-res copies. There are two pics of the Bf 109G-10/R2 "5F + 12" there which I've never seen before.
