The deskinned panel was from when it was in Long Beach, there was a platform to allow you to see the flight deck, there were also 2 openings on the left side so you could go into the cargo bay.
I took part in the overflight when it was opened, I was in the nose of Sentimental Journey, Planes of Fame had the P-51 and P-40 flying escort. I drove out the following year so I could go see it in person.

Makes me wonder how there could be no apparent photos of the plane in that hangar while Hughes was still alive. All the shots I see seem to have been taken after Hughes passed away.
I wonder how often Hughes ever got out to see the Goose after she was put away. Wouldn't shock me if I found out he'd had all that work done from afar and never went back to see the plane in person.
