UPDATE: 2/10/16 Auction: Sikorsky HRS/CH-19E, BuNo130160

I'm in contact with the new owner of BuNo 130160. The Korean War veteran served with HMR-161 in country from late 1952 to early 1955. The helicopter is now in indoor storage in Cleveland awaiting a static restoration. I've shared the complete history of the helicopter with the owner but, have heard nothing beyond the static restoration plans. At least it didn't get scrapped!


The Atlanta Technical School is parting ways with their Sikorsky HRS-3/CH-19E, BuNo130160 (N7030) which has been at the school since early 1969. It would appear from the images in the link below that corrosion is playing havoc with the old girl's aluminum/magnesium alloy skin. I just hope it doesn't end up on the scrap pile. I'd bring it home myself but, I'm afraid the wife would relegate me to living in it if I did!

That is a sad sight. I went thru Atlanta Tech back in 77/78, & the Ole Gal was still in pretty good shape, darn shame it has gone to crap.

The H-23 (a now rare "B" model) at least could be rebuilt by the Hiller rebuilders in Florida.

ABANDON CHUTE was painted prominently on the undersides of rescue choppers.

Unfortunately, the $3405 selling price sounds a lot like scrap value.

$3k seems like a lot considering the weight.

I've always wanted a H-19 in my backyard...too bad I'm about as far away from it as it is possible to be and still be in the mainland U.S.A.

Wow, Robbie, I was also there from January 1977-September 1978! I remember running that helicopter on a few occasions! Sad to see how much its gone downhill.........

Thanks for sharing the color photo from 1963/64 of the former Marine and by then Navy CH-19E. I probably saw this one in the same or similar paint scheme near the end of its service life at Pax River, MD during either the summer of 1966 or 1967. I remember seeing a CH-19E that looked very similar in a hangar during either the "Air Expo 66" or "Air Expo 67" air shows at NAS Pax River in July 1966 or July 1967. I remember an all orange H-34 on standby on the ramp for crash rescue there also. A lot of great airplanes there during those years including the Navy Test Pilot School's Douglas F-6A (former F4D-1) Skyray which flew a demo during the show.

It's a bit much for dirty aluminium scrap, but it's a better than fair price for a complete(ish) R1340 core.

I restored a factory made cutaway engine for display in our shop a few years back. The accessory drive gears buried in it were worth - once inspected and approved - several times the price, shipping and my spare time in making it pretty.
