I love the Phantom so much, I'm going to be bummed when the last QF-4's meet their demise.

If so, watch The Great Santini. I recently saw it for the first time in about 25 years and was surprised by the amount of F-4s in it.

Also, a guest appearance by a C-117, and judging by the date of the film, probably
One of the last in the USMC.

Also, some of the air to air stuff was later used in Airwolf.

My office is just slightly north of the east approach to Reno-Tahoe. Close enough that depending on the runway in use they land or takeoff almost directly overhead.
The Reno High Rollers are flying C-130's now. When they takeoff the windows and any even semi-loose items buzz. I can only imagine what it would be like here if they still had their RF-4's.

Haven't seen a QF-4 in the skies around Tyndall AFB for awhile now, I am seeing the QF-16's from time to time. Need to take a drive out to Tyndall and see if any QF-4's are even on the ramp anymore!

Somewhere around here I have a stack of photos of F-4's taken in flight from a tanker sometime in the mid 70's when my father was stationed at Kadena AB, Okinawa. Plus I have a group of color slides of F-4's taken in the late 80's when my dad was stationed at George AFB, California, all these are ground shots taken in a hanger. I have no ideal how to convert the slides to be viewed on a computer.

The single loudest non-concussive sound I've ever heard was an F-4 on takeoff. It shook me to my spine, I was in a bus alongside the flightline at Tyndall AFB probably in 1986 or 87, for a AFJROTC trip to the base. We rode down the flight line as a Phantom was turning for take off. As we passed line abreast of the back end, the crew lit the burners and the windows in the bus started vibrating so bad, I'm surprised they didn't all shatter. Some didn't put their fingers in their ears and couldn't hear jack for a while that day. At least I knew what to expect, but it was much worse than even I expected. We were probably 50-100 feet away if memory serves.

My dad spent 20 years or so of his 26 years in the USAF working on F-4's, he knew that bird backwards and forwards. My earliest memories as a Military Brat are of F-4 engine runs, and hearing/seeing them in the pattern.

Now as to loudest bird for me it seemed the British Tornados, that were with us at Masirah Island Oman, right after 9-11 were louder than the F-4. The first time I head that thing line up for take-off it scared the hell out me.

Sorry - NO more QF-4 Phantoms at Tyndall. The last ones departed there for Holloman AFB, NM last year. Holloman has the last QF-4 holdouts and they will all be gone by the end of 2016.

TWO QF-4's from Holloman are scheduled to arrive at Oshkosh for EAA AirVenture at roughly 6:00 PM +or- on Monday, July 25 and will remain until they depart on Thursday, July 28.

I thought I had read something in the base newspaper that they had left, but with CRS setting in, I wasn't sure I was remembering that correctly.

Incredible story, I can't imagine what that must have been like! Awesome photos too, looks like the same one that was in Oshkosh last year.

I'm really glad I'll get one more chance to see the Phantoms in Oshkosh next week.

Does this mean, that by the end of 2016, someone is going to be "bummed"?
