I don't know if it was an operational norm, but in IMPACT there is an article diagraming the mass takeoff of bombers in Africa and on unimproved strips. It was B-26's in the pics, and they lined up line abreast (large open field) and the downwind aircraft started first with the rest in intervals of a couple of plane lengths. The goal was to avoid taking of in each others dust.
Not quite the same.
