South east Queensland museums X 3

Decided to change this thread to the three sites I visited while in the area.

Up in Brisbane on my way to NZ, my original plan was to attend the now twice
postponed Watts Bridge Airshow. Sadly due to the bad weather the east coast
of Australia was experiencing at the time the show will be next weekend.

Time to kill so decided to visit some museums, first stop a two hour drive out
to Oakey and visit the Army Aviation Museum, a more extensive collection than
I expected.

In the paddock off in the distance a weather beaten Caribou in an early scheme.




A few tail draggers


Winjeels did spend a period of their service life as forward air control aeroplanes.

It may seem a little strange to have this next lot at an Army Aviation museum,
of course the first military pilots were drafted from the cavalry ranks so perhaps
they do belong. All three of these replicas have flown many Years ago.








Couple more replicas, the DR1 has flown and the chap at the museum told me the
Camel was built to airworthy standard and could fly in theory.

The museum pretty much has rotary wings well and truly covered.

I enjoyed these photos. The blue O-1 Birddog is supposedly one that Australian troops assembled from parts discarded by the US and sent home in a shipping container - I wonder if there's a placard by the plane that tells its story?

Is a nice little museum.I volunteered there and was a Project leader on the Spitfire project for about 12 years.The base is ex WW2 Air Force (6AD Oakey) and was largest scrapping point for RAAF aircraft.Army took it over in the 60,s and started training there.
The Bleriot 11 and Boxkite were both replica early Australian Army Aviation Corp aircraft.The Boxkite was used in the film "Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines" and was restored by Aerotech in Toowoomba.Bleriot replica was built by Peter Ford of Oakey and finished by volunteers of the Museum.
Yes the Birddog had an interesting past.

Thank you for posting, great to see some less well known museums on here. The airframes look well cared for.

Surprised the Blackhawk is still not earning her keep with the fleet.

Perhaps one of Australia’s most famous aeroplane, Kingsford Simth’s Fokker
resides in a purpose built climate controlled building near the Brisbane Airport
international terminal.

Its in storage off base..The Army decided it didnt want to build an Airforce plane..

Some really interesting birds there, thanks. Had a few flights in an Airtourer, (UK version built by Glos-Air), pleasant to fly once I got the hang of the centre stick! Is the Ventura still airworthy? Can't see any drip trays.

Sadly the Ventura is not airworthy, the museum has had her for many years, sat outside
looking a bit sad for quite some time, great to see her newly finished and under cover.
