"Pregnant" Swordfish ...

Sat Nov 26, 2022 3:29 pm

Here's a couple of Swordfish Mk.III's at Boscombe Down for testing of some sort. ASV radar-equipped. The fairing of the aircraft's centimetric radar can be seen below the engine and spotlights.

A merger of two eras..biplane and (then) modern technology.

A bit like the turbine Grumman/Schweizer AG Cats...among the very short list of turbine biplanes.

It wasn't until they installed the Mk.III Swordfish at Duxford that I knew they had ever been operated by the RAF.
I'd always assumed they had been solely Fleet Air Arm.

A bit of a culture shock for an RAF pilot I guess.

I notice that in the first two photos shown, the photographer chose the *identical* viewpoint for each. Trivial, perhaps, but something rarely done (or noticed).

Kind of a testimonial to how much drag producing stuff you can hang on an airplane and still have it fly.

It probably doesn't make much difference to a Stringbag. It's got as much drag as a brick outbuilding already.

Thanks for all the photos! I am a big fan of the Swordfish.
