Should have been at least Reserve Grand Champion behind the P-47...

My understanding is it wasn't a good candidate for a warbird competition: No military equipment, mismatched wing to fuselage (D model wing, C fuselage), civilian paint, 2 seat, rebuilt to match it's look after the war, etc. It is an unbelievably beautiful aircraft and very deserving of an award, just not in a warbird category in my opinion. :drink3:
I can't wait to see it at the National Air Races.

Well said. All of the above would cost it points. This award is for modified warbirds, like a “Resto-mod” category for cars. A T-34 that also won this award looked like an F-16 inside, but it would have gotten 0 cockpit points as a Warbird.

My favorite T-6 of the bunch...had lots of folks inspecting it when I was there Tuesday. I spoke to the pilot that morning:

Oh man, that's such a shame. Saturday was a bad day at Oshkosh. I was not far from the accident at ultralights. I didn't see it, but I'll never forget the sound. Four people and four aircraft lost in the span of 3 hours.

I took a bunch of reference pictures of that T-6 as well.

There are still bits and pieces of Thunderbolt to be found. Just today there's a P-47 windscreen for sale on the internet. The P-51C was restored as a racer, not a warbird. So, I might have entered it in either Antiques or Classics. IF someone restored/recreated "Galloping Ghost" "Strega" or "The RB-51 Red Baron" I don't think it would make sense to judge them as warbirds.

Well said and I'll go with that...

It's pretty well known now. It was the Spanish T-6 from San Marcos.

Turns out I know both occupants. Pray for their families.

Interesting to see Mike George’s name on the awards list for a Cessna 150 - a name more usually associated with his P-51 and F4U.

Pat Harker too, winning grand champion with his gorgeous vintage Cessna 172 N8357B (also someone more commonly known for warbirds).

Here is a guy breaking down the Texan crash.
I know alot of folks here have problems with youtube "experts" examining crashes but this guy has owned and flown more than one T-6, uses ADSB info to break down what happened frame by frame in a very professional, respectful way.
I never knew the T-6 is considered a tricky aircraft to fly, and its stall/spin characteristic under certain conditions is well known https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ktf6LwYG8k

I wish EAA would publish something with photos of all the award winners, whether it's a press release, special edition of Sport Aviation or some other publication we could pay for. Even if it's just the Lindy's. I know what most or all of the warbird winners look like and can usually figure out about half of the Vintage winners when I attend, but it would be nice to see photos of these with the Homebuilts, Seaplanes, Contemporary, etc.
