Propellers, and lots of them: the Tu-95 and An-22 sound very similar.

Remember, those two Russian types have contra-rotating props on powerful turbines, with (presumably) higher tip speeds, so not quite the same thing as the B-36.

I've found any pusher has a bit of an odd noise.. Cessna 337s, Starships, Avantis...

Regarding the comment about C-124s, it would be interesting to compare its sound with a B-36. Same basic engine.
But two fewer and obviously not a pusher.

For me, it sounds like a 'prop' noise, not an 'engine' or 'engine + prop' noise. A400M has an unusual sound too and I think that's a 'prop' sound rather than engine or engine + prop.

In fairness the contraprop point is well-made: the Tu-95 and An-22 had a similar vibe to the Shackleton and Gannet.

It's been a long time since I heard a Shackelton!
At the time, I couldn't figure out why it sounded like it did...the four Griffon's (after all, how often do you hear four at one time?) or the contra-rotating props.

Also, changes in prop pitch significantly change the sound while on the ground.
Very noticeable with a King Air going into beta mode.

The Shack crew from 8 Squadron gave me a nice tour. They joked that some of their avionics came out of B-24s.
They certainly looked like it.
