Sentimemtal Journey had new terminal ends fabricated as well. The upper rear spar bars had about six feet of new spar spliced in too. There was no way for moisture to escape so it gathered at that point and caused considerable corrosion. You cannot see the corrosion unless you pull the terminal fittings.

Lynn you mean you went to the airsho in '73 to look at planes instead of coming to the Chlympiad? San Marcos was really different in those days. P.S. I won that year. The Chlympiad that is, and got free VIP tickets to the airsho.

Firewalls...

Just noticed something. I was a volunteer on the Memphis Belle before it was shipped to Dayton. The firewalls on the Belle were all perfectly flat; they did not have the 'dished' out area that TR has. I guess it was a modification on G's and/or later F models. I am curious as to what caused the change, though. Anybody know?

Well, some of the B-17 guys may be a little jealous of Gary and the B-24, so here is a picture update of Texas Raiders from the Gulf Coast Wing website. The vertical stabilizer has been re-installed, so they keep making progress. I'll be heading back to Houston on Jan 8th, so I'll really attempt to get some really nice shots, plus info from Craig. Well, the crew of Texas Raiders continue to make progress. The horizontals have now been installed. I'll be heading down in a few weeks to Houston and will try to get some really good pics and info! I'll try to take some detailed pics of the firewalls and ball turret for those who have made requests...... Alan

Hi all,
I'm new here, but couldn't resist replying to this thread. Like others here, Texas Raiders was the first B-17 I ever saw outside of a book or TV. Here is our first meeting, at the Selfridge Field 50th anniversary airshow on July 2, 1977 (one of those dates permanently etched in my memory.) I was 13..I'm the one on the right..fortunately my buddy was the one stuck with the plaid polyester slacks!
