I see the CAF P-40 and the ex-Eric Mingledorf airplane now with "The War Eagles" museum but not Destefani's old bird.

Amado, the P-63 is the F model. One of only 2 built, it has a laminar wing. It is based in Houston with the West Houston Squadron, CAF.

Am I confused, or didn't all P-63s have a laminar flow wing? I thought that was the primary difference between the P-39 and the P63.

bdk, You are right about the laminar wing. Everything else is different between the P-39 vs P-63. They share the same engine config and a similar shape.

Everything I've ever read or been told about the P-63F was that the two that were built were unique to the P-63 line. The P-63F has an enlarged tail and longer wings. It also has a higher output V1710.

Rick, thanks very much for the info. The two "F" models built, 43-11719 (now CAF N6763) and 43-11722, were fitted with a much taller fin and rudder.

I have always wondered if anyone caught video or photos of the P-63 with Mike driving and the P-51 that was flying the wrong pattern had their little lose formation practice. I watched it and am still amazed that nothing touched. Everyone who witnessed it that day I think is still amazed!

Hi--

The P-40E is the Mingledorff bird; like many surviving Es she's really an ex-RCAF H87A Kittyhawk I, but the livery on her is Dallas Clinger's, and the tail art is as real as can be...it was copied from the original P-40's rudder fabric which Clinger kept as a souvenir!

The P-63F is a remarkable survivor, near-unique even when new, and she has an additional pedigree as a racer, not only at Reno in the 70s and 80s but also at Cleveland in the late 40s.
