I photographed a Dauntless at the USAF Museum in Ohio in 1996. Here is one from the USAF Museum website...

Does anyone have serial number for this one?

Good question. Maybe he is one of those people that just have random collections of photos rather than actually knowing what aircraft are featured.

Hi Mike--

When I was at Dayton in June there were two Dauntlesses there. The one in your pic looks like the one that was in the museum proper. Did you record the tail number on it? The green one in 2004 was serialed "115786" (which would be 41-15786); also at Dayton this year was a blue USN Dauntless, tarped in clear plastic in one of the restoration hangars, which seems to be the one now at Chicago Midway Airport.

Aaahhh HA! Another victim of the "Representive Markings Scheme"! It is marked as "41-15786" but is in fact 10575 as Rob indicates. After Rob's post I used WD4 to confirm this. I don't know the significance of the USAAF s/n yet.

BTW... I was not in the habit of noting markings at the time. Oh well.

Hi Mike--

So, it's been the same green A-24/SBD in the museum the whole time. Hmm. How'd the blue one end up in the restoration hangar then, and why? My understanding in June had been that the blue one had been on show before the green one (which still didn't have outer wings installed), but was now being shipped out to a Navy display (Midway Airport, as it turns out). :?

Bump due to the recent Kalamazoo Dauntless discussion. There does not seem to be a thread, beyond a couple mentions, regarding the Dauntless now hanging in the Terminal at Chicago's Midway Airport.
