Hi, I have found here in Europe at a B-17F crashsite almost the complete Upper Turret . The parts are in a very good preserved condition and most of the parts I have named via searching at Google. But there are some parts that I do not know and can't find at Google.

I have here a heavy part ( about 30kg. ) of this B-17 , my question is : Is this perhaps the Upper Turret motor ??. Is from this part a drawing or picture on board of a B-17F ? and where is it located inside the B-17F ?.

Hello,

The part you have listed is in fact part of the Sperry Upper Turret power system. Your part consists of an electric power motor (28 volt) with two Vickers hydraulic units attached on either end. One of the hydraulic units was for elevation and the other for azimuth. This power system is the same as the one on the Sperry Lower Ball Turret and the parts were all interchangeable between the two turrets.

If you have any other pics to share of the turret parts I'd love to see them! Hope this information helps.

Question : John do you have for me any pictures of drawings from this Sperry Upper Turret power system inside a B-17 ?, and at which location ( inside the Turret ?? ) was this electric power motor located ?.

I don't have a Sperry Upper Turret manual which would show the position of the motor and hydraulic units. However, I do know of somebody that does have one and I'll try to dig up his contact information for you.

Were these turret parts all that remains at this particular crash site, or are there more components of the aircraft?

Hi Edward,

There is more .... at least one engine is still in the ground, I will try to recovered this engine in the spring of 2007. The condition of all the parts is so great becourse the ground-type is perfect ( I do not know the right English word ) there is almost no oxygen in this ground-type ( very black ), but I have to say, that it take still a lot of time/ours to clean all the parts and then to conservated with a special paint ( anti-corrosion ).
