F86 Wartime Markings

Mon Dec 18, 2006 9:18 pm

I'm looking for information on a particuliar marking I've seen on an F86 Sabre. Besides the typical yellow bands one picture I've seen has a small Red-white-Red band parallel to the fuselage yellow band but located wrapped around the nose. It doesn't appear to be very wide. Does anyone know the significance of this marking?
I'll try to post the picture tomorrow.
Thanks
David

A closer look reveals just a Red stripe bordered by one white stripe. Any Ideas?
Thanks

I couldn't count the stripes but either flight commander or squadron commander. This is the 51st FIW possibly 25 FIS or 26th.

Thanks Jack,
I thought the same thing, but became unsure when I saw 2 of them painted with this marking in the same photo.
I'm wanting to update the paint on our Sabre and need to tell the our owner what I'd like to do and what this marking means.
Thanks again,
David

Col George Ruddell CO & 8 kill ace of the 39th FIS 51st FIW flew a beautiful F-86 named "Mig Mad Mavis" which carried 3 blue command stripes around the nose. A perfect paint scheme for you!! George also had 2.5 P-47 kills in the ETO in WWII and also flew P-40s in the 11th FS Aleution Tigers.
