Whats the procedure to be able to view the statics at Lackland? I see from their website Lackland is a closed base but they give a 2 hour tour the second Tuesday of every month, however its guided and only mentions that they stop at the statics for awhile. Anyone take the tour and know how long awhile is?

Bill.

Call the base Public Affairs office and flat out ask them if theres a way you can get an escort onto the base to view the static dispay aircraft on the parade grounds. The only other option is to find a military friend that can get you on base...

As far as viewing the parade ground aircraft I've gone to the guard shack by the first gate and asked if I could park and walk over to look at them.
The F-105s might be more difficult.

Worked for me.

Rick,

Tried that, said I had to go on the tour.

I saw mention of a museum or two on the base, maybe one could get a pass for that and then cut over and visit the planes?

Youse troops that did basic at Lackland want a little cheese with that?
Try Samson AFB in Nov., Dec., and Jan. with the temperature about
10 below, and a 25 knot wind off the lake when you're wearing nothing heavier than a field jacket.
WAHOOO...what memories.

I dunno, Mudge. My recruiter promised me "Six Sunny Weeks in San Antone"! But, for this poor old Yank from the Deep North, 80deg inside the airport at 2200hrs was a bit of a climate shock! Give me one of those balmy days you're going on about and I'll gladly go out in scivies and slippers! Of course, the 13yrs that I delivered mail did teach me that 6-8 hours a day in it is for the young pups......................Hmmmmm .........
What year did they close Samson again?...................................

After the time I spent there, you'd think I'd at least know how to spell it.
It is, of course, SamPson AFB.
I'm pretty sure I was in one of the last flights through there. I left in Jan. '56 and it closed shortly thereafter.
