B-29 Part Question

Fri Feb 02, 2007 11:36 pm

Ok, I'm sure Gary can help me here, but if anyone else knows, please speak up! :D

Where is this in a B-29? I believe it is somewhere in the nacelle. Also, is the picture upside down?

Thanks!

It's definately upside down, but I don't think it's a B-29. I'll have to check some closeups I have at home (posting this from my girlfreind's machine) but I think it's the main gear well from a B-26 Marauder, looking forward. Here are some pics from the MAPS Air Museum's website.

Definitely not B-29. If you look at the landing gear uplock doomaflochie thingy, it has a hydraulic line going to it. The only hydraulic system on the B-29 is for the brakes. Everything else is electric. Sorry.

Well, this picture came from a donation to MAPS. I believe the woman had been a secretary and had taken a buch of these photos when she left. They are all in a book and include photos of the B-26 wing line, FG-1 Assembly Line, the airships and a few other things. I thought this looked like the inside of a B-26, but the caption on the photo says B-29. :?

Didn't realize you were with MAPS, Phantomace...my face is certainly red now!

It migh make sense that some B-29 and B-26 stuff got mixed up, since Martin did build B-29s. But I think it more likely that somebody simply accidentally mis-labeled the photo.

Not a problem at all! :D

Ok, I found a picture from the B-26 Wing Line at Goodyear and it matches this picture. This picture was in the middle of other B-26 photos and many of them mentioned about how after the B-26 contract was finished, the B-29 contract was started in the same spot. Also, the caption refers to the B-29 as the "Super Flying Fortress" :D

Here's the picture. It is reversed from the other photo.
