White 1 Flew Today

I went up to Paine Field this morning. I went into the office and found out they were intending to fly, but due to construction for a new hotel nearby the runway, the runway was closed. I waited for about 2 hours, then at 12:03 White 1 took to the runway and took off. I shot about 4 or 5 frames of film then had to leave to get to work on time (got there with about 1 minute to spare).

Now I can say that I saw a Me-262 fly.

Very cool.

How about some Martin Caiden:"The searing heat of the turbos...........etc.,etc." Did it have some guts on takeoff?

Bud Granley was supposed to be chasing them in the Fouga again. That's a pretty cool job to have!

Yep. The runway at Paine is 9000 ft, and I would estimate it was off the ground in 4000 ft. The climb out was steep, about the same at the new 777 that took off ealier. I assume this is not within the original performance envelope.

It was fantastic to witness. I just wish I had the time to hang out ther longer and see it land. Oh well.

I did not see the Fouga and I was looking for it. They may not have had the opptunity to get it off the ground ahead of time. Apparently they had to call ahead by a 1/2 hour to have the runway cleared when they were ready to go. Apparently the nearby construction had cables of some kind stretched across the runway. I assume their windows were small. I don't know if it was up for an hour or just for one circuit.

Those were tuff days; I can remember when I'd have to wait to see my own pictures. I don't miss those days

I remember sitting at the Gathering of Corsairs with my laptop (well it was GE's laptop) looking at all the pictures I had just taken. Nothing like instant Gratification. :lol:

Went back up to the Me-262 Project today. Apparently the flight I witnessed went well. The pilot ended it with a high speed flyby over the taxy way to give the crew a good show. Apparently they now have completed the FAA's required 10 hours. They still have a bit of flying to complete their Phase 1 of testing, before they go into phase 2. She didn't explain the differences between the two phases.

Tango Tango is supposed to do a taxy test today or tomorrow. Flight testing is supposed to be early this summer.

Phase 1 is most likely limited to manuevers required for basic takeoff and landing and slight crosswind componets. Phase 2 should take up there and open the envelope up on speed, flap position, accelerated stalls and the like. If they have it spit in to 3 Phases, the third will open the envelope up completely on both ends of the speed range and any aerobatic manuevers that it's going to have approval for.

You don't know anything about this stuff do you? :wink:

I also forgot to mention that White 1 is now down for "maintenance". I don't know what this means. It only did a few flights. Maybe they are digging in to take a close look at things and see what needs to be checked closely after only a few flights and what can be left for a longer interval?
