Richard, the tail number format was changed. They applied it correctly. The jet was 64, the tail numbers at the time dropped the first number.

Hey Richard...thanks for the kudos about our team effort...any ideas for phase 2 are welcome....

That's a pretty common question about the tail #'s....look in WIX for other links with details. I burned a lot of airtime with Maxwell AFB USAF History dept on that topic....over the years the coding has changed a few times.

The budget year (not the manufacturing year) for 683 was 1964. So that year they would go with the last digit of the budget year with the 4 digits of the a/c...so 1964-0683 becomes 40 - 683....

Guess they didn't think about F-4s being produced for so long...! !
