Hello:

I would like help locating Navy & Marine mission reports and other “detailed” records relating to the planes that were lost near Yap Island in 1944 and 1945. I have a list of the planes at the following link:

American Planes Lost on Missions to Yap Island
http://www.missingaircrew.com/yap/yapmissions.asp

I know how (have a lot of experience) to locate AAF records including MACR (Missing Air Crew Reports), mission reports, etc.; however, I’m struggling with the best sources to request similar detailed mission reports for the Navy & Marine planes listed on the link above. For example, I paid someone $75 last week for what I thought was going to be detailed data and it turned out to be much, much, less. Please help point me to the archives that have the best data.

Thanks in advance,

Respectfully,

-Pat

try the federal records repository in st louis missouri. all old military service records are stored their, i'm sure a google search will produce something. or try the name of the place & put .gov at the end. you better have a sharp machete to cut through all the red tape, but answers will be found their with a patient attitude, & it shouldn't cost you hardly anything!! good luck!!! tom

Hi,

Contact the National Archives and/or the Navy Historical Center in Washington, D.C. Roll # 31 of the Naval Aviation Safety Center Aircraft Accident Reports contain loss information on TBMs. I'm not sure what roll has the F4Us; you could also send in the Bureau Numbers of the Aircraft and see if that might work. The National Archives also holds most Navy/Marine squadron records that are very detailed.
