"Fighting 17" - gettin' there

Wed Feb 07, 2007 11:10 am

Hi guys,

Put the finishing touches on the background this am. I have a love/hate relationship with clouds - the first couple of hours I'm usually seriously thinking about throwing the thing out the window, but as usual I press on and before long things come together.

Have to let the canvas dry for a few days before I start on the Corsair. It's 24 x 32 oil on linen mounted on panel.

Here's the small oil sketch I did to use as a rough color guide. Naturally, I changed a few things, but the Corsair will look pretty much the same (hopefully!):

Wade,

If you're ever near completion of one and find yourself wanting to throw it out the window - if you could give it a nice long throw towards the Portland, OR, area, that'd be great! :)

You do some beautiful work. I didn't think it was possible to make the Corsair look any better, but you do it! :D

Thanks for the good words. :D

I wasn't just kidding about sometimes thinking of "tossing" them ... any artist will tell you that it takes a bit of "experience" to not give up when it looks like my 2nd grader did the first hour's worth of work.

I've torn canvas off panels in frustration before - after many hours worth of work. I'm just getting to the point now that I am able to look "beyond" the early application of gawdawful messes of light and dark paint (which is supposed to be a grouping of clouds - eventually) to see what lies beyond.

I don't paint, but I do some other sort of graphic crafty stuff and I even get annoyed with that, so I can imagine your frustration level with your work. We are all our own worst critics! I am off to go check out your website now! :)

It looks great Wade. It would look even better with a couple of 80th Headhunter P38s too :)

The clouds in the 'final' are much better / more interesting than the colo(u)r sketch.

Nice.

Thought I'd snap a quick shot while stretching my legs. Here's the result of the first sit down session on the airplane. By the time I quit today, I'll have the national insignia and (red) prop hub and dome done.
