A friend of mine and I recently "adopted" a Nanchang CJ-6A Dragon and we're going to have to strip and repaint it (after we get it home and the novelty wears off a little!) but we're looking for some ideas for a paint scheme. A little artistic licence is cool here so if anyone has any ideas for something interesting, be it Chinese or Russian, Cambodian, North Vietnamese or whatever, we'd be real interested in hearing or seeing them.
(An hour of dual and some cold beer afterwards to the winner!)
Thanks for the help.

An hour of dual and some cold ones? Wow... every hour counts for a beginning pilot (ME)...
I better get my thinking toque on!
I'll let you know what I come up with.
Cheers,
David

I would paint it in its original colors. Whatever they may be.

That's kinda the direction that I'm leaning in too but we thought we'd look around some before committing to it.

Nathan,
The average CJ (as shown) was usually a flat green color with a number or two for id, I think he's looking for a litle more excitement such as these seen at a few of the past Red Star formation clinics

Since not that many people are familiar with CJ paint schemes, why not try a little humor. On one side put a painting of Chairman Mao swimming the river; on the other side a big wristwatch, with "original Rolux" logo on it.

At the moment it's the color of an old, green chalkboard (not to mention that it looks like it was painted with a mop, outside, in a sandstorm!) Chinese paint, it would appear, is somewhat utilitarian (and roughly 1/8" thick) but the metal should be perfect underneath it all. A nicely done original type paint scheme can still look really good but if we find something really cool then...it's just paint, after all. Until it's repainted we were thinking of making up some spurious decals for it with "Royal Sahib Air Force" or similiar on it just for a giggle.

I am partial to this paint scheme:

Hey Dan, Wait until you start stripping the beast. Mine was advertised with "NEW" paint and it did have new Chinese paint. Like yours we had a hard time figuring out whether they had used a broom or a mop. It looked like they held the stencils about 6" from the surface when spraying the insignias.Mine had three paint jobs on it and the colr was pretty easy to strip. Then you get to the primer. That is the most tenacious stuff I have ever seen. Had to do small sections and scrub with a wire brush. We did two of them at the same time and I swear I'll never strip another airplane again. I bet we stripped 60 or 70lbs of paint off each airplane. All of the metal is anodized and looks kinda cool in bare metal. I flew mine like that and never did get it painted. The CJ is a crummy trainer in my opinion. It just is too easy and nice to fly with no vices. Light controls, T-6 performance and 182 fuel burn makes a lot of bang for the buck. Enjoy it, I really had a good time in mine. Don

Thanks Don. I'm getting pretty curious to try my hand at her. The pilot's manual is "interesting" to say the least given that it's all written in pidgeon-english (much better than my Chinese though.) Seems to revolve around the "When in doubt, bail out!" principle. At the moment she's still out west but we'll likely go get her around April or so. I doubt if we'll be in any real rush to strip it until sometime next winter, depending. Was yours the bare metal one in Luftwaffe markings?

Like a bottle of Vodka laying on its side!
The round part of the nose can be the bottle capture, the rest is the bottle.
