Dan, Mine just had some Russian Stars on it. Didn't take it to many airshows but flew it around 75hrs a year. Just good fun to fly. I was going to paint mine in the Russian aerobatic team scheme. Two tone camo with the red and yellow lightning bolt down the side and red and yellow tips and cowl ring. You will find this is one of the easiest airplanes you will ever fly so don't worry about it. Also a good mechanic is a must to set things up correctly in the first place. There is a lot of misinformation out there about flying and maitaining these airplanes and you need someone who can wade through it all. Don

Whichever scheme you choose, just make sure you do not reproduce the lousy camo patterns we see all the time on CJs and other little warbirds.

No offense to the owners, but the patterns in the following aircraft are rather not to my taste...

Hm, cool...this thread could go on practically forever...A couple random ideas from my chronically spinning brain:

*bone-stock PLAAF dark green (like the one in the lineup shot just posted)

*PLAAF stars-and-bars and fire-breathing-dragon nose art on an overall high gloss Chinese Red finish (ie. Rosso Cino/Ferrari red)

*a livery copped from a postwar air racer: how about blue and white with a checkerboard cowl, like the ex-Soplata F2G? Or red and black like the ill-fated Airacobra "Cobra I"? (Hm. A CJ6 class at Reno...??)

*Soviet wartime camo, maybe an update on the sort of look a Po-2 light-attack/obs bipe would've worn. (Hm. Nose art "Night Witch", with a sexy lady sailing along aboard a broom?)

*North Korean or North Vietnamese insignia on pretty much any sort of finish at all...a "Bedcheck Charlie" depiction (like the random Ryan PT-22 that popped up in an old episode of M*A*S*H)!

*Trying to think what other types the CJ6A resembles...actually thought of one, albeit it's a stretch, but from a "Tora" standpoint it might come in handy for airshows or even film work. Late-war Japanese Navy green over sky grey, with markings for a B6N Tenzan or D4Y Suisei carrier-based bomber (the CJ6 actually looks vaguely like both types, with the long canopy and round engine of the B6N and the slightly-cranked wings of the D4Y). All those late-war F4Us et cetera would enjoy shooting you down at airshows, finally not having to pretend to have been flying at the time of Pearl...Bonus with this is, you could do the paintwork completely plain, dark green over sky grey (Sandy Thomson Fury style)...then change out "decal" markings PLAAF to IJN (or whatever) and back again as circumstances warranted...

*Purple and orange, to go with Walt's BT-13

BTW, am I seeing things, or are the main gear on a CJ6A based on those of a Yak-11, fitted "backward" for a nosewheel application? (Wouldn't be unique, as the Pilatus P2 used "swapped" Me109-type main gear legs)...

Interesting ideas guys... The "groundrules" if you will are a military/vintage type scheme. We'd prefer something real and factual but there's some interesting ideas coming - keep it up! The pseudo-Japanese/Tora scheme you could have alot of fun with! I can see Jimmy in his headband already! For the time being though (until the strip) it'll likely sport new PLAAF markings (probably vinyl) once we get it home. Being something of a purist (pronounced I'm told, as "square") I'd like to see her in a high quality reproduction of the original scheme but we'll see what happens. There are some nice, wartime, green/green-black Soviet schemes.

No Steve - one purple and orange airplane in a lifetime is enough!

I'll have to look at that main gear design. I know what you're talking about but I'll have to crack some books when I get home.

They are not like on the Yak-11, they are of trailing link design and they provide the comfort of a Kenworth on the taxiway.

Ya - Ollie's right. But the fairings look similiar. All things considered I think it's rather a nice looking airplane (although still no BT-13!)

Seriously, they are very good birds. Will you put a M-14P in her? You'll get even better mileage if you do so. That red one that lives next door gets close to 7GPH at standard cruise IIRC.

No, it's a pretty safe bet that she'll stay stock. The engine that's in her right now doesn't even have ten hours on it since new. 7 GPH? Can't be. That's only half again what my Champ burns and that M14 runs some 360hp, doesn't it? I don't have the numbers here in front of me but I think the 285hp Huosai (sp?) burns around 15 or 16 US gallons/hour (100lbs/hr) which jives pretty well with a IO-520's hp and burn from what I remember from my C-185 driving days.

I understand that they're a hoot to try and taxi until you get the hang of it? And that gear looks nigh on indestructible (which will no doubt come in handy!)

Kinda, since there's no steerable nose wheel. But if you've ever taxied anything that had a castoring tail wheel, you're good to go. Chipmunk time? Even better, you know how to handle that handle.

I'm not checked on it, I prefer my radials to be tailwheeled...

If you are willing to stretch things a bit, since the CJ is a cousin of the Yak-52, how about the snazzy paint scheme of the Hungarian "Sky Hussars" aerobatic team.

I particularly like that Sidewinder option!

7 GPH with a M-14P? No I think it will be about 17 GPH.
But it's not a travel plane, it's aerobatic!
By the way I heard today that our Yakkes Foundation red Yak has new paint, red again.
I guess for taxiing you also use differential braking, as with the Yak-52, and you hear all the puffing of the pneumatic brakes.
