That's a Corsair I wouldn't want to fly. I expect it is off Korea, not WWII. Look at the 2 differnet tirres (so cold my fingers are chattering) on no. 69. Think about those Brits who launched at night in open cockpit Swordfish after the Bismark!

Bill,

It has to be pre-Korea, there is no red stripe in the national insignia bars. No matter, I've always said the airport is the coldest place in town, but these men have that beat by miles! Imagine a 20 to 30 knot "breeze" blowing down the deck during flight ops.

It's not a corsair it's an SB2C Helldiver.

If the pictures were taken on the same ship at the same time-period then I am pretty sure this is pre-Korea. I think that most if not all of the SB2Cs were replaced by Skyraiders by then. The SB2C wasn't well loved among the Navy so I think they sold them off to foreign countries as soon as they could after WWII.

I'm so GLAD I never had to work the deck in that cold, Working the flight line at NAS Fallon in the winter was bad enough.

A side story about the cold and snow in Fallon

We had just lost 2 jets the night before, they collided over one of the bombing range (1 pilot was killed the other Ejected safely). We also woke up to several inches of snow that next morning. So we were out there shoveling off the aircraft and goofing off. This accident meant that we had crashed 3 jets in just over 1 year, like 14 days over 1 year if I recall correctly, so there was not flying for us for a few days while “They” decided what to do about us tying VF-213 in aircraft loses.

The base let the some news crew on base to do some filming about the crashes, which we did not know.

That night while downing beer at the base club and watching us make the news we saw ourselves out on the flight line removing snow, everyone there had a panic look in their eye. We where waiting for them to say how we lost 2 aircraft and 1 pilot and show a video clip of us having a snowball fight on the flight line. We were all very happy that none of that footage was shown! I truly thing there would have been He-l to pay if it had aired.

About 1 week later VF-213 put jet #4 into the ground, well it was actually a house in Nashville and everyone was focused on them and not us anymore. Funny thing was (if it can be funny) was that when we saw that on the news and before we got word it was VF-213, I made the joke, “I bet its 213, because they did not want to be tied with us”.

Tim
