Steve

I did not know the HH-52A was airworthy. I've seen it on the ramp at the WW2 weekends. I'd sure like to see it fly sometime.

A local CAF member here has two Hueys and a Cobra, all flying, and we feature them in the annual CAF Airsho. Last year we had a segment on a mythic RESCAP mission with two Sandy's, an O-2, Bell 47 and one Huey as the dust-off bird and the Cobra flying support. Very popular with the crowd so we are expanding it for this year's show.

YL-37 maybe?

Two of their fine-looking 'copters were on display at the 2006 Cowtown Warbird Roundup:

Both of these machines are restored to absolutley stunning condition. I spoke with one of their pilots at the event. He told me that both of those pictured are combat veterans which saw service in Viet Nam. One of them is restored in its original combat markings (I forget which one he said it was). He also said that they have one more flyer and at least one more under restoration.

Cheers!

Cavanaugh Flight Museum operates this beauty, which was also on display at the 2006 Cowtown Warbird Roundup:

Love the Hornet! Wasn't there on flown at Oshkosh years ago? How many are airworthy? I think there is a static on display at the Museum of Flight at Boeing Field too.

I met Mark DiCiero when he was restoring his Piasecki at Chino. Neat guy!

There are only two flying Hornets according to the folks at Classic Rotors, theirs, and another one with the Rare and Vintage Rotorcraft Museum (I don't know where it's at).

I know that it was flown after its restoration but like many of their aircraft i believe it hasn't been flown in quite some time. I think MAAM tends to put their money in the "bread winners" ie. B-25 for shows, SNJ and stearman for rides.

Supposedly, the MAAM only needs an igniter for the engine to get it back in the air again. They are apparently difficult (and probably expensive) to find. If anyone knows where they could get one, I'm sure that they'd appreciate the head's up.

What about the S-56/H-34 Mojave? It would be $$$ to operate, but I think that would be a great one to see in the air again.

DB2- In my opinion the H-37 Mojave would be the best and most exciting vintage helicopter to be restored to flying status. The sight and sound of that beauty would be something to behold and hear.

As I said in one of my earlier replies in this thread and as someone else mentioned about a guy in New Jersey (Sparta??), this type of project has been considered. It is probably among the more daunting helicopter restorations that could be undertaken, but as I said before - it sure would be impressive!

Sorry, missed your earlier post.

Googled around a bit and unfortunately saw that the last flying example of a Mojave (flew into the 80s) was sunk in the 90s in a freshwater lake in NJ, in order to serve as a diving attraction. What a waste!

Here's a cool site:

A couple of years ago while driving through West Virginia I saw a very "colorful" CH/HH-3 Jolly Green Giant hovering over the mountains logging near White Sulpher Springs.

Anybody seen this one?
