Did some new stuff today

Wed Mar 14, 2007 5:24 pm

Turning stalls. New and semi-terrifying. Did OK though. Just stayed calm and remembered the procedure.
More power on/off stalls. Fell off to the left on one of the power off stalls so he made me do it again.
More S turns across a point. Did OK but need to remember wind direction and bank progression.
Slow flying while maintaining speed, altitude, and heading. Speed and altitude weren't difficult but had trouble holding my heading within about 10 degrees because of the wind. Today was the worst wind I've flown in, so far.
Did a low pass over the runway. (Needless to say, he showed me how first.) Did fairly well for my first time. Had to be talked through it though. It did help me get a feel for when and where the "ground effect" was gonna' be encountered.
Didn't even TRY a landing with the 15k quartering wind from left rear.
Told my instructor he had to guess which person in the right seat was gonna' land the thing. Even as proficient as he is, the wind ballooned us twice.
Next lessons are going to be a bit more "strict" about allowable errors in speed, altitude, and heading. Plus or minus certain allowable deviations.

To quote Tom Hanks: "The hard is what makes it great."

I hope you did not. Land/takeoff INTO the wind. Might sound silly, but many have not and ended up in trouble.

Sorry...I did say left REAR didn't I? Meant left FRONT.

Mudge the directionally challenged

Mudge,

The prop is usually up front....

You'd better not fly an O2-A

Mudge, you got a loose valve cover!

I'm installing smoke with my next annual. My A+P said to loosen the #4 valve cover!

"Forgive him Mudge, he's always been a little queer for the pushmepullyas ! "

At least I can fly with an engine out and my feet off the rudder pedals!

Hi tom,

We met at Thunder and had quite the chat on the 02... Man I really like
your plane.. its my favorite vietnam era plane. I did a favor last fall of
taking some pics of the FAC party suits at USAFM in dayton last fall and
after reading some of the exhibit write ups I was more impressed with
the plane and guys that survived flying things like this.

So, Have any more in flight pics?

Mudge, one of these days, I hope you are going to go flying in some nice weather and then you are doing to do just fine. And forget all that other boring stuff about takeoffs, landings etc. LOW PASS for sure! Get up about 5000 AGL, Merlin rpm to 2850, power up to plus 12 (54 inches) should clear the plugs off good, nose down about 20 degrees, remember to level off not too low, usually about when you see the pyro guys hitting the dirt is about right. It's bad form to hit the wind sock, or actually chop up any of the foks in the orange suits. A little momentum is good, about 400 indicated ought to blow off any dust. A gentle pull to a 60 degree climb and you've got energy for a few rolls. Now those kids in the air conditioned diesel burners can do it faster, but they won't sound or smell as good.
