I got the following new address to write to Robin Olds, who has now been moved to another part of the hospital for recovery and rehab. This came from his daughter Chris earlier today. She asks that you do not try to call Robin right now but cards or letters are very welcome.

Brig. Gen. (USAF ret) Robin Olds
c/o The Doak Walker Center
Yampa Valley Medical Center
1100 Central Park Drive
Steamboat Springs, CO 80487

Just to be clear, Robin is not out of the woods yet by any means but has made a remarkable upturn in his condition, based on the reports we get from his family. He may still have a battle ahead but who better to fight it?

My wife and I went through a several year period of illness with her father, also a WWII vet and Air Force career officer, that ended in his passing just a couple of years ago, so I know personally the ups and downs of what a family goes through. Let's all provide the support that we would want our own family to have. My 2 cents.

Randy, thanks for posting the address, I sent a card today. He may not see it or care, but it takes only a few minutes of our time. The "Doak Walker" hospital has a story of another remarkable Texas man and a local family. Doak Walker grew up in Dallas, and was a champion high school football player at Highland Park. His teamate Bobby Lane was a star at Texas and later the Detriot Lions, and another Kyle Rote also made the pros. Doak was small, even for then, about 170lbs. and some did not expect him to continue to star in college. Well, as a junior at SMU he won the Heisman trophy, and he would likely have won it as a senior, but when he missed some games due to injury, he ask that his name not be considered again. Class like that would be rare today. He was still "too small" of course for the pros, but he went to Detriot to join Layne. He was rookie of the year, several times led the league in rushing and many times all pro. Later he moved to Steamboat where he learned and loved skiing. The local family Werner, was to ski racing as Doak was to football. Buddy Werner beat Europes best at their own game. Doak married Buddy's sister and settled in Steamboat, skiing Mt. Werner. A few years ago a fall caused a head injury and he passed away. The name Werner or Walker in Steamboat is renown.

Bill - I was born and grew up in Dallas at that time, until I went off to college, etc., so I'm well aware of the Doak Walker story. Thanks for letting other in on a bit of his history. Fly safe.

When I met him at OSH, of course he was so "mugged" that I didnt get a picture with him, just of him signing stuff, and then I was able to get a card signed by him.
