Snail Mail From USA to Canada

It was just announced on the news that the US Postal Service has announced that mail must include the receiver's full name and address otherwise it will not proceed across the border. I assume it would be returned to send.
The reporter went on to say this announcement may have been prompted by a 5+ weeks back log of mail at customs crossing the border into Canada. Apparently there are not enough customs inspectors to go through it all.
You have to wonder what the heck is going on. It is not like there is anything different happening that is prompting higher volumes.
Anyway... This is just FYI.

Well, I think there might be more to this.
A guy I know recently returned from Canada with this story he heard
while waiting at the border. Seems the Custom guys on the US side were
getting paid a lot more than there Canadian counterparts. When this was
discovered things got real slow on the Canadian side.
Don't know if this is true but your story adds to it.
It makes some sense? Yes/No?

Maybe they are trying to intercept the cigarettes for prescription drug trade going on?

Apparently the mail is turned back in Canada if it does not have the correct address. The address must be printed in ink using Roman print (the 26 letter alphabet), and be a complete address including the full name of the person receiving the item.
Apparently the lack of inspectors is in Canada Customs and they are hiring to resolve.
What prompted all of this is that Canada Customs starting enfocing rules that have been around forever-and-ever last June. It has be gradually buidling to a crisis.
Anway... if you are having trouble with the mail, this might explain it.

When it was announced to us(I'm Postal!
) The explanation was definately a Canadian requirement. We require return addresses on everything but letter-sized mail for domestic mail. I think it's so we can track down who sent the bomb(s) in the larger envelopes and boxes 
. International mail is enough to drive you to drink 
. And for those of you who are sending mail to a foreign country(yes, Canada is a foreign country in the eyes of the government 
), make sure and use the right postage. 37 cents wont do it and your mail will come back. Also, make good and sure you write the COUNTRY on the envelope. Hard as it is to believe, but, we do have people that DO NOT KNOW that Montreal, Quebec, IS IN CANADA! . Maybe this will help move your snail mail along at a turtles pace now!

There was a strike. I think it has been cleared up. That might have accounted for some of the backlog.

Just remember Mike, if you want your mail to get to Halifax, Send it by way of the Republic and I GARUNNTEEEE it will get to Saskatuan(sp) by June
