Hey Neal,

How about a part # 618618 Packard -7 piston modified for a 3 piece oil ring, stock 2nd ring and the top dykes ring. Looks to me like it swallowed a valve.

Gee Mike -- that's exactly what I would have guessed, ROFLMAO....

Hey, the only way I know for sure it's a Merlin is that I took the picture and I know the airplane it was hanging off of!

Is that prop on Strega these days the same one Tiger contacted the runway with a few years ago?

Yup, sure is. We used it for the Gold race in 05 after the H prop gave up.

It's amazing how fast that prop goes after that incident on that bad weather day.

I suppose that anyone could be right about what happened to the piston Neal pictured, but I have one I use as a book end on my desk that looks quite similar to it and it was caused by a stuck valve, which then broke a piece off of it, and then bounced around for a little while on top of the piston.........

Not argueing what happened to the piston Neal pictured but it definitely looked like something else was going on besides the broken valve. Maybe it is the angle the photo was taken ?

Gary's on the other hand has been hammered but notice no scoring or smearing of the piston sidewall.

That piston is suffering from another condition as has been pointed out-- probably called lack of ADI. Swelled up and tried to stick-- only problem was the other 11 woundn't let it!!
