A place where restoration project-type threads can go to avoid falling off the main page in the WIX hangar. Feel free to start threads on Restoration projects and/or warbird maintenance here. Named in memoriam for Gary Austin, a good friend of the site and known as RetroAviation here. He will be sorely missed.

mustangdriver wrote:I mean no disrespect, it is just a personal taste thing. The dark colors of the B-24 do hide them from a distance, but the b-17 and when the B-24 is a light color stands out a good bit. I am just not a fan. It doesn't mean that you can't be.

RickH wrote:Mustangdriver, there you go again. Next time you are close to a real flying B-24, look at those names. Most are memorials to veterans remembered by veterans or their families. The Collings Bomber tour is seen by millions and flown on by thousands each year. I have NEVER heard anyone complain about those names on the sides. People just don't seem to notice them and are very excited and appreciative that they are out there and flying.

The names are purposely done and sized so that they don't really show up in pictures taken from any distance or in the air.

No disrespect here either. I enjoy and am grateful to the Collings Foundation for keeping those beautiful aircraft in the air. I visit them every time their nearby and also help to coordinate their visits.

I don't have a problem with the names on the side of the b-24, but the photos posted are of the wrong side. Here's the right side for those who might be interested.

Of course your right, Jerry. I just didn't have any pictures of the other side. When Witchcraft was silver there were names on both sides. But still not too detracting from the overall scheme.

BTW; I LOVE the OD on Witchcraft and the new Paint on "Diamond Lil"! (or whatever she's going to be named!)

I'm with you Jerry! I think they would both look fantastic in the air together!!! Now if we could get the PB4-Y in gear,...that would be an even better three ship!!

Is that the LSFM's PB4Y you're talking about? What's the status on it?

In my opinion, this is absolutely the wrong place for the recent discussion.

This thread is to watch the amazing work Gary and helpers have done on the B-24A.

Take the other stuff to a different thread please.

On the plaque note, I worked on lil' this past Sunday, and I took a good look at the guns installed. The first thought in my head was "If it weren't for these folks, I'd just be sitting in a window instead of a gun position". I sort of feel like the general public may feel the same way, although when you see them in person, the plaques definately do not take away from the guns. Sure they're noticable, but not like having a neon arrow pointing at them. I have a deep rooted interest in this particular plane, and I know when I look at the various items I was responsible for, in my heart and soul, that's "mine". It's like wetting your pants in a dark suit-It's a warm feeling, but nobody really notices.

Dan, you are , of course, absolutely right, sorry to have wandered.

Thanks for all of the concern about the sponsor plaques on the guns. It's obvious that it's a touchy subject for everyone. However, let's please get back to the topic of the airplane. I am walking out the door as soon as I post this to go pick up the racer, so I'll hope to have some type of update for y'all to get us all back on track, perhaps late tomorrow afternoon.

Now, y'all stop with the arguing, or I'll suspend the updates and won't show you anything from the unveiling. ;-)

My buddy Philo gets everybody talking like the days of the Col.

Gary is talking about a few days off

And I miss the best quote on this thread!

And just for the record guys and Rick H esspecially, I am a huge fan of the collings birds. They come to the Country Airport here every year. I really meant no disrespect. Being that the names on the aircraft are vets that changes things a bit.

Have a great time Gary!

All the best for the recovery of the racer Gary and number one thing.... Relax! :)

As for the rest of you lets get back on topic of Old 927 and nothing to do with jeeps etc eh?

Wed May 02, 2007 8:47 am

Alright people...let's all gather round for a group hug and sing "Kum Bye Ya" until we get a big warm fuzzy inside.  O.K....everyone feel better? Now lets bring the topic back to Gary and ol 927.

Now the best quote I heard is when Gary was telling us how to install that HS prop and said at one point," if you are even one tooth off, she'll shake like a double jointed hooker on dollar day". Now that's too much!!

Funny quote Dave...but are we talking about one tooth off on the prop gearing or one tooth left in the hooker's head? :vom:  If it's the latter than maybe we all need to start a fund raising drive so Gary can buy some higher quality hookers.
