It is not just the lighting, it is the bloody black walls/ceiling.
Apparently someone in charge believes it makes the a/c displays "more dramatic".
Yeah, so would tiki torches and flare guns, I suppose...

You are absolutely correct about the ceiling. A coat of white paint would do wonders for the lighting situation.
