PICS! Collection at Volk Field ANG Base

Don’t adjust your screen – I just take bad pictures!

What looks like silver whiskers growing on some of the upper surfaces are actually Bird-X needle strips.

Nice pics! It looks like in another 10 yrs or less several of these planes will probably fall apart from sitting out in the harsh climate.

Nice pics, from a fellow cheese head. If there is one thing I hate to see though, it's a Mustang on a stick. A sorry sight indeed. :(

I had an up close look at that Mustang about 15 years ago and it was pretty corroded, especially in the lower areas. A fiberglass replica candidate if there ever was one, before it's too late.

Thanks for posting these!

Didn't know there was so much there. I was only ever able to see the P-51 and the F-102s from the highway.

How did you get access to see the planes? Is it open to the public?

Thanks for posting the pics! 8) As another fellow cheese-head on this board I'm embarrassed to say I have yet to make a trip over to Volk Field to check out the sites. Guess it's time for a road trip.

Hey, who are you guys calling a cheese-head? I was just passing through your fine state when my pickup did that funny thing where it pulls over to the side and the engine quits whenever it’s near a warbird. I really need to take it back to the Dealer to have that fixed.

While I didn’t crack open any inspection covers to look for corrosion, as a whole the aircraft are in pretty good visual condition. It’s just my pictures that came out funny looking – the second picture of the P-51 makes it look much worse than it really is. Camera operator error!

Like most military bases these days, it’s much more restrictive. I drove up to the guard shack, which is just in front of the P-51 and F-86, and asked if I could take some pictures. The guard told me I could park outside the gate and walk through to photograph those only. When I was walking back he told me that the Museum (a log cabin next to the Cobra) was actually open at that time, and I could take a look at everything else as well. I traded my Drivers License for a Visitors Pass for the windshield and I was good to go. I’m not sure of the hours the Museum is open, but there is a phone number to call on the link page in my original post. Just watch for the little yellow signs that say something to effect of No Public Access.

That's O.K. Eric...us cheese-heads won't hold it against you.

Not to change the subject, but a friend of mine has a last name of Colby, and she wanted a cheese head really bad. So while I was in Oshkosh we went looking for a cheese head. It took us forever to find one! Where is this museum exactly?

No we didn't get a jersey, just a cheese head. The only jersey you can wear dawntan is black and gold.
