Curious - P-51A vs later model flying characteristics

I know the Merlin models made more HP at altitude than the Allison, but also the Merlins were heavier. I think they also changed the wing root and I'm sure some other stuff.

Just wondering how they compare, if anybody has experience in the two types.

From what I heard, the Allison powered 'stangs were still superior to the Merlin ones at low altitude.

Just a guess, but I'd venture to say that the mechanics liked the Allison powered ones better. Not trying to downplay the importance of the Merlin, but the Allison (at least to me, in this day and age) is much more "user friendly."

That might be an interesting topic for another thread.
