There are good things about the rope, and I think that in most cases if the pilots are around, and you ask to cross the rope for a pic, that they would be fine with that. But over all I like the KOSH way better. Charge $20..00 to get in, and most of our problems will be solved.

Why close, because I'm a photographer, but without press access. I do not touch anything at shows like Oshkosh, but I will walk up as close as I can get to take pics, like this,

I have a lens that will get that same picture from 100' away.

Mudge the well equipped
(Did I mean to say that?)

No offense, but I have more than enough fire power in lenses for 100 feet away, but the photo will not look the same, trust me. :)

OK...OK...I guess I didn't 'splain my question adequately. Photography notwithstanding, why do you want to "cuddle" with the airplane?

Mudge the self explanatory :D

ps...Tim...I DO trust you. I DO, I DO, I DO. I take pictures myself. I'm not, however, a "photographer". I assume by describing yourself as a photographer, you mean you take pictures as a profession. True?

Photography is a very serious hobby. As for getting close, it is all about the history of these planes, being able to get up close, look them over. Take Reno as an example, if people were not allowed up close access in the pits like we are, it really would not be worth going.

If I want to see a warbird from a distance, I'll go to a museum. :)

Believe me, I would LOVE to get right up next to the aircraft! (In my previous statement, I was just trying to not get my hopes up and be prepared to not get as close as I would like! :( )

I'm not sure why I like being up close, I think it has something to do with the aura of the aircraft and being close to history and all that. I have never had a ride in a Mustang or any WWII aircraft, but when I'm next to one, I feel the energy surrounding it. I have always felt this way, but it really intensified after working on the Line Crew... there is just something about standing 10 feet in front of a P-51, P-47, or what have you, and seeing the engine come to life! I love it! :D

Phantom...FINALLY...an answer to my question. "Because it FEELS good."
Totally the type of answer I'm looking for. Not simply the "mechanics" of being close to get a better picture. A "gut" feeling. An emotional, goose bump, visceral experience.
THANK YOU. :D

Mudge the touchy feely.
(Somehow, "touchy feely" doesn't sound quite right. Oh well. :? )

Ok, now I see where your going. That's why I spent about 30 minutes, no ear plugs, freezing my butt off, watching Dago Red do an engine test at night, 10-20 feet away.

Hmmmm... prolly not since you already announced yourself as "Mudge the Well Equipped"

Seriously though I remember the first time I saw FiFi. I got goose bumbs when it did a flyby of the airport, and then when I walked up to it I got goose bumbs, and of course when I sat in the pilots seat! :D That's how it is with all the warbirds I see at an airshow. Heck, I even love the feeling of the "dead" ones at museums! There is just something mystical about them.
