Mossie tailwheel ???

Fri May 11, 2007 12:32 pm

Good day

The other day I was cleaning out my barn and I found what I think is a tail wheel and tire for a Mosquito Bomber

I c/out a more detailed inspection of the tailwheel :

The tire is a  Dunlop 6.50 / 5  1/2 '' TC ,  diameter is 16"
It has a tube . Outer tread is channeled around the middle and raised on the outer edges just as seen in any pic of the a/c.
The thickness is approx 6"  - 6.5"

The wheel diameter is 7"
It has the following markings on it :           oder 1315/51       DRNG. NO. AHO17219   ISSUE 5

Overall the tire looks unused and the wheel condition is 8 out of 10

A friend questioned whether it was Mosquito tail wheel or Vampire nose wheel. I am now not entirely sure if is Mosquito or not but it sure looks like it
It also resembles a tailwheel for a Lanc or Blenhiem

Can anyone confirm this from the info above ?

Thanks

Pictures? I just recently sold a Mossie tailwheel, so I'd have an idea of what one would look like, but my memory is such that I can't remember all of the numbers.

Ask on the FlyPast forum. There's a couple of people there with lists of Dunlop part numbers.

Dunlop Aviation Equipment Manual ref. no. B. O. 51/6 gives the Mosquito tailwheel tyre size as 8.00 - 5 TC. (Lancaster tailwheel tyre is 12.50 - 10 TC)

The size you were asking about;

"The tire is a Dunlop 6.50 / 5 1/2 TC"

is listed for the nosewheel on De Havilland Vampire and Venom.

Mark Johnson lives in Broomfield, Co. (Denver) has hangar at Jeffco, now Rocky Mt. Regional airport, and owns a DH single seat jet, is it Venom or Vampire? I don't have a phone number and am not home now.
