A place where restoration project-type threads can go to avoid falling off the main page in the WIX hangar. Feel free to start threads on Restoration projects and/or warbird maintenance here. Named in memoriam for Gary Austin, a good friend of the site and known as RetroAviation here. He will be sorely missed.

Thank you so much. It was extremely important to me for it to look as authentic and somewhat period cartoony as possible. Like I have said earlier in the thread, that extended into the application and brush painting it all by hand. And Sean is even more a stickler for that kind of thing. Gary was concerned about folks working in the airplane while we were painting. And we had a few oopsy daisys too... but hey, guys would have been servicing the airplane back in the day while it was getting nose art, and it helped me relate just a bit to the guys that were doing it back during the war. Priceless.
Fun side note: When we flew into Dallas, our departure gate for Midland was... B24. We got a good laugh out of that!

Gary - At every step along the way of this overwhelming project, you have come up with an approach and answer, whatever the obstacle. And were kind enough to share each stage of the transformation with us. Nothing could have been more innovative than how you tackled the tail turret. Your ability to think outside the box is something to be very proud of, as well as your skills in what seems like every systems and structures feature on the aircraft. Your dogged perseverance is the reason the plane looks fabulous (as does the nose art). Congratulations.

Well Gary you did try to warn some of us about the nose art.
I think it would look great on a T-Shirt for kids but I mean the nose art is a pic of the airplane itself
Who ever painted the nose art did a great job,I guess I was just holding out hope for the Big Ass U.S. Flag or start-up Colonel "Mosquito"
Maybe I just need to drink more of the Kool-Aid

Gary, what a great idea for the artwork - it gives the plane a character all its own. In fact, you should use it to make a .gif (props spinning, bombs dropping) for your new avatar... you've earned it and then some!

I was at work all day today, and every chance I had I checked WIX to see if there were any pictures posted of Ol 927.
I saw them while I wa at work, but didn't have time to leave a comment. Here's my comment now...
Gary, she looks great! I wish I could come down there and check it out. Maybe if you swing her far enough North I'll get a chance to see her.
Congrats to Gary and all of his helpful helpers for an amazing job well done. Just a few more tweaks right? Also thank you Gary, for your constant postings complete with pictures and stories.
I think someone deserves a break. Maybe somewhere far away from airplanes.
Cheers,
David
